MEDICAL WEIGHT LOSS to Improve Fat Loss
SEMAGLUTIDE
FDA-approved for weight management as Wegovy since June 2021
FDA-approved for type 2 diabetes as Ozempic since 2017
Semaglutide is an FDA-approved injectable prescription medication used for weight management in adults. It works by mimicking the action of a naturally occurring hormone in the body called GLP-1 (glucagon-like peptide-1). This hormone helps regulate blood sugar levels and appetite. When semaglutide is administered, it stimulates the release of insulin, reduces the production of glucagon, and slows down the emptying of the stomach. These actions collectively contribute to weight loss by promoting a feeling of fullness, reducing food intake, and improving insulin sensitivity.
TIRZEPATIDE
FDA-approved for weight management as Zepbound since Nov 2023
FDA-approved for type 2 diabetes as Mounjaro since May 2022
Tirzepatide works by mimicking the GLP-1 and GIP hormones that are naturally secreted by the intestine after a meal, which prompts insulin secretion. It also reduces appetite by slowing down the time it takes the stomach to empty and interacting with areas in the brain harboring GLP-1 receptors to signal satiety.
RETATRUTIDE
Completed phase 2 clinical studies in 2023
Currently in phase 3 clinical studies (expected to conclude 2026)
FDA-approval anticipated 2027
Retatrutide is an experimental drug for obesity. It has finished phase II clinical studies and is currently in phase III clinical studies. It works by mimicking three hormones in the gut, and in turn, controls glucose levels, decreases appetite, and increases the feeling of fullness. It may be more effective in preserving lean muscle than its predecessors.
What Causes Stubborn Fat?
Losing stubborn fat can be an immensely frustrating and challenging experience, as certain types of fat are resistant to traditional weight loss methods like diet and exercise. This is often influenced by complex, underlying factors beyond our control, such as hormonal imbalances, genetic predispositions, and the natural aging process.
As we grow older, our metabolism gradually slows down, resulting in a decline in muscle mass that hinders our ability to efficiently burn fat. This can make weight loss feel like an uphill battle, no matter how diligently we try. It’s important to approach weight loss with understanding and compassion, acknowledging that each individual faces unique struggles and obstacles when it comes to shedding excess pounds.
Factors like stress, sleep quality, underlying medical conditions, and certain medications can also play a role in weight management. That’s why a judgment-free, medically supervised approach is crucial. By leveraging scientifically proven weight loss solutions, we can help patients overcome stubborn fat and achieve sustainable, long-term weight management.
